What is Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental condition that may affect communication, social interaction, and daily functioning. Individuals with autism may exhibit repetitive behaviors, challenges with social cues, and a wide range of intellectual abilities. Importantly, autism is not mental retardation. Our in-home autism care services for toddlers in Toronto help families identify and address these behaviors early.
Important note: Autism is not mental retardation.

Prevalence of Autism
Autism impacts approximately 1 in 54 children (or 10 per 1,000), typically appearing between birth and age 2. Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed than girls. At Rose Hill Care, our in-home autism care services include early intervention programs to support families in the GTA, including Richmond Hill.
Possible Causes of Autism
While no single cause exists for autism, contributing factors may include:
- Genetic conditions and heritability
- Advanced parental age (fathers may have a slightly increased risk)
- Prematurity (before 26 weeks gestation, very low birth weight)
- Environmental exposures, such as air pollution, toxins, or pesticides during pregnancy
Increased Risk Factors
Certain conditions may elevate autism risk, including:
- Fever during pregnancy
- Exposure to heavy metals (mercury, lead, arsenic)
- Imbalance in essential metals (zinc, manganese)
- Pesticide exposure
Signs and Symptoms of Autism
Symptoms of autism typically appear within the first 2 years WITH A SIGNIFICANT DELAY IN DEVELOPING LANGUAGE OR SOCIAL SKILLS BUT IT MAY BE NOTICED IN ANY AGE OF CHILDREN AND ADULTS and may include:
- Avoiding eye contact or preferring solitude
- Difficulty expressing emotions or reading others
- Intense focus on specific interests or objects
- Repetitive movements or verbal phrases
- Sensory sensitivities (light, sound, touch)
- Resistance to changes in routine
Our in‑home assessments identify these early indicators, and we develop personalized therapies to strengthen communication, social skills, and self‑regulation.
Treatment for Autism
While there’s no cure for autism, early intervention significantly enhances outcomes. Diagnosis before age 3 supports better developmental progress. Treatment options include:
- Speech/language, occupational, physical, and behavioral therapy
- Medications for managing irritability, anxiety, or co-occurring conditions like ADHD
- Lifelong support for all stages, including adulthood

Vaccines and Autism
Extensive research confirms no connection between childhood vaccines and autism. Instead, maternal infections, autoimmune conditions, and inflammation during pregnancy are linked to increased risk.
